Creatures

Culvas Creatures is an Afro centric music ensemble, their live experience includes elements of visual arts and therefore allows their audiences to experience music through a canvas. Founded by a collective of creatives, their music is influenced by a variety of music genres and the root of their sound prides from their African origin. Their distinct sound and creative concepts are what set them apart and their aim is to captivate their audience with an elegant and centered musical experience.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Ntsika Benya is a South Cape born Actor, Writer and Musician. His career began in 2009 when he enrolled at the Lady Grey Arts Academy studying drama and music till he matriculated in 2013. One of his highest achievements while enrolled at the academy includes being selected to be an arts exchange student in Sweden (2012). In 2014 and 2015 he was enrolled at the South African State Theatre (SAST) where he majored in Live Performances. It was at SAST where he got his first experience of performing on a professional stage, part taking in shows like The Presidents Man by Paul Grootboom, 1606, an ovation award winning play at the National Arts Festival (2015), and Tsotsi the musical by Mkhululi Mabhija and Zwai Bala at the Arts Cape Theatre in 2017. He then staged his first stage play titled Stones(2017), which won a Shashalazi Theatre award for best script and also scored him a Cape Town Arts Fringe Festival nomination for Best Fresh Talent (script). His television credits include South African hit series The Herd 1 and 2 (2018/19), etv telenovela Isipho The Gift(2019/20), Erased(2020), and Coca Cola and Wimpy commercials(2018/19). He is currently a Composer and Lead vocalist for a music ensemble titled Culvas Creatures.

Shaun Phiti is a South African Artist and philanthropist. His career began after he landed a full scholarship from the Holy Cross Monastery USA in 2012, which allowed him to enrolled at the Lady Grey Arts Academy where he majored in visual arts and music studies. During his time (2012-2014) at the academy one of his biggest achievements includes being selected for a student arts exchange program in Sweden(2013). After matriculating in 2014, he enrolled at Motheo College in Bloemfontein, where he majored in Jewellery Design while also working for Etron sound and lighting as an engineer. During this time, he sold his paintings as a side hustle, an occupation that gave birth to an art movement inspired by his speech condition – Stutterism Art. A movement he would later go and exhibit in London(2019). He now works as a professional jeweller at Metal Concentrators by day, and composes/performs music and paintings by night.

Reneilwe Mashigo (Lekgowa Keys) is a South African born Pianist whose music career began in 2014, when he enrolled at the Vusi Mahlasela Music Development Foundation. There he achieved his grade 5 in music theory from UNISA. He now works part time as a lecturer at the same institution. Reneilwe also studied jazz and various genres of music and that made him proficient at sight reading. Some of his achievements include being a music director for Isambulo the musical and chosen for the South African State Theatre (2016). He has been a Pianist for a variety of musical productions including Angola Camp and Nomzamo the song at the same theatre. He now is involved in school choir competitions, assisting schools with strategies on how to win music competitions.
