This live music performance is linked to EMPINI YAMALUNGELO, a project that aims to educate youth through audio-visual media and music, by encouraging their critical thinking skills and fostering their empowerment to prevent and combat gender based violence (GBV).
In order to reach this aim, the first project activity was to write and record a song that will advance a message that advocates against Gender Based Violence and Children Abuse.
The song, EMPINI YAMALUNGELO, is sung by EL-FAKAZEI, TA-FEYA, DJ ZER’ONGENAMBOBO featuring ITHWASA LEKHANSELA and DJ JOEJO.
EMPINI YAMALUNGELO addresses the priority of education to prevent and combat GBV, in particular by changing attitudes and behaviours among girls and boys. It does so using an innovative approach based on music that fits with youths’ interests. Music plays an essential role in teenagers’ lives. It contributes to the construction of gender identity and peer group affiliation.
The Radio Audience Measurement Survey, through Radio Monitor, shows that the song Empini Yamalungelo has been played on radio more than 148 times since its release in October 2021 with the total listenership of 6 million listeners.
