From the winds that brought the universe into being to the first cry of a newborn and the last breath of life, air is nature’s reciprocal network of vitality. And nature is our collective interface to the technology of the cosmos.

To be nature and to be with nature is in our nature. Yet, are we capable of dissolving the opposition between natural and artificial so as to reconnect with spirit, and to converge on equal footing?

Helane is such a meeting place of virtual absence through digital presence: an intersection of spirit and pixel, a conversation of coding and self. It is a reminder that there is much more melody to what we see, and way more colour in what we hear. And, under the right circumstances, just maybe, the interface transforms into an inconsequentially thin membrane that separates nothing.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Siphumeze Khundayi is an art-maker, photographer and facilitator interested in creative ways of bringing together dialogue and artistic practice in relation to African Queer identity. This interest links to her work as artistic director of HOLAAfrica!, a digital space for raising awareness on issues of African women sexuality. Under this banner, she delivered a TedXCapeTown Women talk titled, A History Of Coochie Conversations and the TedTalk, How to have a healthier, positive relationship to sex.

Sikhuthali Oliver Bonga is theatre practitioner and scholar based in Bloemfontein in the Free State. Born in Qumbu in Mthozela location in the Eastern Cape, he matriculated in 2014 and went on to complete a B.A. Hons. Drama and Theatre Arts degree at the University of the Free State, specialising in Theatre Making and Playwriting. Here he was awarded with the prize for Best Theatre Making Student, and Most Artistic Student.

Noncedo Gxekwa engages in collaborative forms of photography, individuals and nature. Currently living in the Cape Town, she completed her studies at CPUT in 2010. Past work include a collaboration with Resonance Bazar on the Moonsoon Project – a performative research project looking into decolonizing cultural practices emerging in South Africa. In 2016, she formed a residence with Amplify Studio which led to a solo exhibition in 2017 titled, To Love and Not To Love: A Street View.

Walter Strydom is an award-winning theatre artist, director, academic, and educator who is passionate about the possibilities for arts and education to empower individuality, establish and strengthen cross cultural bonds, and promote social cohesion and social justice. Walter’s multi-faceted skillset allows him to easily transition between the roles of producer, director, or actor in professional and amateur theatre.
