KAK

Theatre / Graeme College

Since the early 70’s, Black Consciousness Theatre has been very vocal and bold about the status quo in the country. Voices like Maishe Maponya were not afraid to speak out, and sometimes became the lone voices for the voiceless. In the advent of Democracy, he released an anthology of poems aptly named “Truth be Told: Da’s Kak in die Land”.
Shashalaziville residents have only 6 years until their landfill space reaches saturation point unless some drastic measures are taken to bring about substantial recycling change.
However, no-one expected the waste management hierarchy to take such drastic measures that will alter everyone’s lives forever. This becomes a journey of survival. Will the new system wipe out the old, or will the old remain the cost-effective solution to waste disposal? Everyone has their own issues (KAK) that they have to carry.

Set in a fictitious world aptly named Shashalaziville (meaning the open space), KAK merges real identifiable characters with real identifiable problems. This landfill space is analogous to the real challenges that South Africans face. The potential hazards associated with landfill operations are numerous and include fatal accidents, infrastructure damage, pollution of the local environment, harmful air emissions, to simple nuisance problems.
