Maletsatsi

This art film draws on African concepts and ritual to explore the role of black African women. Through the use of visual imagery, choreographed movement, voice overs, and a recorded soundtrack, the two female cast members unpack the challenges and dynamics of keeping everything in balance in a contemporary family setting.

Told through Maletsatsi’s journey from innocent childhood, the work touches on patriarchy and gender roles, the connection between mother and daughter, and ancestors. In a dream state, she is shown moments from her life, both life changing and difficult. It is through this that she recognises her strength and finds healing.
