Woke!

Theatre / Glennie Hall

Woke! is a stellar production in a socially-distanced, mask wearing, sanitiser supplied environment! The cast is able to command the attention of an audience scattered throughout a space with audience participation, which at times determines the direction of the play.

The focus is on the disenfranchised and disillusioned youth of present day South Africa. It’s an in your face, no holds barred reflection of the perceptions of youth that are politically well informed and on trend culturally. Most especially highlighted are insights into marginalisation, unemployment, sexuality and racial and social injustice.

On the surface, the themes seem dark. However, the execution of this spellbinding production is littered with comedy, dance. song and brilliant acting. It’s fast paced, racy like the issues, and full of youthful zest. It is 40 minutes of pure entertainment with a capital E! Not to be missed.

My name is Emihle Bhoto, I grew up as a Dancer in dusty areas of Cape Town specifically Khayelitsha. I have recently finished my Diploma in Public Administration. I’m a soft hearted person, super exuberant, laid back and confident. I studied Acting in High School (Chris Hani Arts and Culture High School) and haven’t looked back since. I have been in a few Arts organizations and have left a good name for my future. These include ITLP (International Theatre Literate Project) for the ASSITEJ International Theatre Festival, which was under Magnet Theatre (Khaltsha Gang). I’m also a Poet and an Actress at Ikrele Le Joy Organization. I joined Bapa Theatre Academy for a year, where I played a main character named Thandiwe in a Xhosa novel called Hamba Nam Ndipheleke. Later on that year I was cast at Bridgetown Theatre Company where I settled and felt like I belonged. Even though I haven’t been in the industry for too long, I have still found my passion. Today I can unhesitantly say acting is my life.

I then worked for the Children’s Resource Center as a Cultural coordinator. We worked in community groups and in schools. In between I performed in several plays, including ‘Have you see Zandile?’, ‘The Naked Truth’, ‘Flying Colours’, and ‘Isikhuni Sibuya Nomkhwezeli’.
